I don't think this is necessary, but if you do this, teachers will need a way to toggle all student laser pointers on the screen or they'll have chaos.

We are working to bring richer capability to the Whiteboard Web app inside Teams Meetings, starting with text support. Stay tuned.

I had seen the Whiteboard as a presentation option, but always under pressure, hadn't realized this was embedded in Teams, too.
A few observations:
Most important: Opening in the app is useful, and the native app then continues to present in the Teams meeting. The display area is limited (app shows more than is actually shown in Teams), and this is not shown to the presenter in the native app. That's a significant problem because you could be writing in outer areas, not have that seen, and not realize it.
The eraser in Teams is actually more powerful than in the app itself. Touch a stroke once with the Teams/Whiteboard eraser and it all disappears.
The back side of a Surface pen doesn't erase like it does in the native app.
The eraser in the native app helpfully gets bigger if I get more aggressive with my erasing.

A systemwide universal keyboard shortcut to be able to capture any screen to then be able to write on it would be very useful.
If I have a PDF of a lesson plan, formula sheet, or any other lesson plan, instantly being able to “write on it” would be very useful.

Isn't that what saving as a PDF or image file would be able to do already?
Then import into a slideshow.

Something simple like being able to lock any imported background to protect it from erasure (even canvas clearing) would be helpful.

Simply expanding on the Ink-to-Shape feature with more of these things like straight lines, level lines, would suffice.
Ink-to-shape items also need to erase as easily as writing, which they currently do not.
Having an imported background *stay* is needed, too.

Implementing something like what Google Jamboard has would be useful. Does not need to show user, especially if it's just the teacher showing his own presentation. Also more useful if board is being used as a presentation which depends on having multiple slides which MS Whiteboard does not yet currently have, but very much could use.

Being able to have multiple “slides” on the same whiteboard like Google Jamboard can do would be very useful and make the experience more seamless.
That would be more efficient for teaching multiple things in multiple classes.

I figured it out, but it was not intuitive. The tap/click felt redundant, not exactly like what I expected would happen.

I don't have this problem. My Surface Pen works fine.
I had to replace the battery today. Also, make sure it is paired via Bluetooth.

I had to turn off this otherwise useful feature off because when I erased on the board, the shapes wouldn't go away.
Also, my circles were becoming ovals instead.
